A-Level Business is examined largely through case material and extended judgement: you are given a firm in a situation and asked what it should do, or whether a decision was a good one. That means two distinct skills. One is quantitative and unforgiving — investment appraisal, capacity utilisation, gearing and liquidity ratios, labour turnover, variance analysis — where a method that is nearly right earns nothing. The other is the use of a framework as an argument rather than as a label: knowing what Ansoff's matrix or Porter's generic strategies actually claim, where the claim is weak, and what in the case would count as evidence either way. Practice here covers both, and the case businesses are invented so that nothing depends on facts about a real firm that may since have changed.
