A-Level Politics is examined on argument, not on allegiance. The UK component asks how the system works and where the disagreements about it lie — electoral systems and what each one does to a result, the constitution and whether its flexibility is a strength, the balance between Parliament and the executive, the courts and the limits of their power. The ideas component asks what liberalism, conservatism and socialism each claim, and where thinkers within one tradition disagree with each other, which is usually where the marks are. Practice here is descriptive throughout: every question asks what a position holds and on what grounds, never which position is right, and where a tradition contains real internal disagreement the question names who holds each side.
