A-Level Sociology is examined through extended writing, and the marks separate candidates on two things: whether you can attach a claim to the perspective that makes it, and whether you can say why a piece of evidence supports it rather than simply asserting that it does. The substantive topics vary by board — education is almost universal, families, crime and deviance, beliefs and the media rotate — but theory and methods run through all of them, and a methods question can arrive attached to any topic. Practice here treats perspectives as positions with arguments rather than as labels to be dropped into an essay, and it is careful to name who holds a claim, since sociologists disagree with each other rather more than revision notes suggest.
