AP Statistics — free-response practice

This material prepares you for the free-response section of the AP Statistics Exam in its revised form, first given in May 2027. Under the course framework effective fall 2026, the section has four 10-point questions in a fixed order: Question 1 centers on formulating questions and collecting data, Question 2 on analyzing data and interpreting results, Question 3 on inference, and Question 4 on several content areas at once. Each question is worth 12.5 percent of the exam, so the written answers carry half of the score.

The printable written work is the core of the material: eight original multi-part questions, two in the style of each free-response question. The Question 1 pair asks for an investigative question with all three components, a stratified sampling plan and a design for a randomized experiment with blinding and scope. The Question 2 pair asks for outlier checks and a full comparison of two branches' service times, and for conditional proportions, a segmented bar chart and an association claim. The Question 3 pair asks for a complete paired t-interval and a complete two-proportion test with the correct scope. The Question 4 pair combines regression output with a normal probability and the complement rule, and a binomial model with a simulation and the sampling distribution of a proportion. Handwritten answers are photographed and checked against model answers and key points that mirror what graders look for.

The quiz trains the method behind full-credit answers, with one defensible answer per question: the format of both sections of the revised exam and the tools allowed; which free-response question does what; spotting the missing set-up in an inference answer; writing a complete conclusion; naming a procedure exactly; defining a parameter in context; what the task verbs 'interpret' and 'compare' require; replacing calculator syntax with labeled work; and reading the wording of a question to choose between a test and an interval.

The flashcards summarize the exam format, the four practices, the parts of a complete inference answer and the task verbs.

The oral exam plays out free-response scenarios aloud: the examiner asks each part in turn, presses for the details graders expect, and ends with short, precise feedback.

All scenarios and questions are original practice written by Zestly; none is a released exam question or scoring guideline, and the key points are Zestly's own. The material follows the published course framework but is independent practice and does not predict an exam score.

  • Describe the format of both sections of the revised AP Statistics Exam and the tools allowed
  • Recognize what each of the four free-response questions focuses on
  • Write complete inference answers: procedure, parameters, hypotheses, conditions, computation and conclusion in context
  • Respond to task verbs such as interpret, justify and compare as graders expect
  • Show calculator work in statistical notation and define parameters in context
  • Combine several content areas in one multi-part answer

Practice material written by Zestly, based on the College Board AP Statistics course and exam description effective fall 2026 (exam format for May 2027: 42 multiple-choice questions and four 10-point free-response questions) and the AP Statistics course revision summary on AP Central. Original questions, not released exam items or scoring guidelines.
