The maths tests come in two shapes and reward two different things. The arithmetic paper is thirty-odd calculations with no words around them — long multiplication and division, fractions, percentages, and the order operations have to be done in — and it is won by accuracy and speed at methods that have been practised until they are automatic. The two reasoning papers are word problems, where the arithmetic is usually easy and the difficulty is working out which calculation the question is actually asking for, often across two or three steps. Practice here mixes both, and every question shows the working rather than just the answer, because in the reasoning papers a method that is right earns marks even when the final number is not.
