GCSE Religious Studies is built in two halves: a study of the beliefs, teachings and practices of two religions — most schools take Christianity and one other — and a set of thematic studies where those beliefs are applied to questions about relationships, life and death, conflict, crime and punishment, and human rights. The second half is where the marks are, and it rewards precision: knowing which teaching a believer would cite, and knowing that believers within the same religion disagree. Practice here is descriptive throughout. It asks what adherents hold and why, never whether a belief is true, and it is careful to show a range of view within each tradition rather than a single official line.
