GCSE Spanish covers listening, speaking, reading and writing around themes that each board sets out in its own way — AQA's specification, for example, groups them as People and lifestyle, Popular culture, and Communication and the world around us. Since the reformed specifications were first taught in 2024, every board also works from a defined vocabulary list and sets a dictation in the listening paper, a read-aloud task in the speaking test and translation in both directions. Two things separate grades here. One is the pair of decisions Spanish makes that English does not — ser against estar, the preterite against the imperfect — which are the most common source of lost marks in the writing paper. The other is vocabulary breadth, since reading and listening are built from words you either recognise or do not. Practice here works on both, with questions written in English about Spanish so that what is tested is the language rather than your ability to guess from context.
