Three run through the whole chapter: the earliest times to the Great Fire of 1666, then 1666 to 1900, then 1900 to the present. Five go deeper into one period or theme: early Britain to 1066; the Middle Ages, 1066–1485; Tudor and Stuart people; ideas, inventions and empire, 1660–1900; and modern Britain, 1918–2013. A few questions in the newer sets ask you to choose two answers.

Why this chapter is hard, and it is not the historyMore than five thousand years compressed into a few dozen pages, at a fairly even level of detail. A date from the Roman occupation gets roughly the same weight as a date from the twentieth century, so there is no natural shape to hang it on and nothing tells you which facts matter more. Meanwhile the questions ask for exactly the things that are hardest to hold without a shape: dates, names and numbers.The fix is not to read it again. It is to test yourself on it, find the twenty or thirty facts that will not stick, and work on those.The pairs that get confusedAlmost every wrong answer in these sets is a real fact from somewhere else in the chapter, put next to the right one deliberately. The pairs worth separating before you sit the test:

55 BC and AD 43 — Caesar's failed expedition, and the actual Roman conquest a century later. And AD 410, when the Romans left.

1066 and 1215 — the Norman Conquest, and Magna Carta.

1707 and 1801 — the Act of Union with Scotland, which created Great Britain, and the Act of Union with Ireland, which created the United Kingdom. And 1603, when the crowns were shared but the countries were not yet joined.

1807 and 1833 — the abolition of the slave trade, and the abolition of slavery itself, a quarter of a century apart.

Nelson and Wellington — both beat Napoleon; one at sea at Trafalgar in 1805, one on land at Waterloo in 1815.

Lloyd George and Churchill — Prime Minister at the end of the First World War, and for most of the Second.

1918 and 1928 — women over 30 with a property qualification, and then women on the same terms as men.

VE Day and VJ Day — the war in Europe ended in May 1945; the war against Japan went on until August.

One thing to know about the syllabus itselfThe official handbook is the third edition, published in 2013, and the test is set from it. Events since then are not on the syllabus, however important they have been — which is unusual and worth knowing, because it means you are revising a fixed body of material with a known end date rather than keeping up with the news.The questions and explanations here are Zestly's own, written from publicly known facts.
