The chapter where most people lose marks, in three parts: the earliest times to the Great Fire of 1666, then 1666 to 1900, then 1900 to the present.
Two thousand years compressed into a few dozen pages, at a fairly even level of detail. A date from the Roman occupation gets roughly the same weight as a date from the twentieth century, so there is no natural shape to hang it on and nothing tells you which facts matter more. Meanwhile the questions ask for exactly the things that are hardest to hold without a shape: dates, names and numbers.
The fix is not to read it again. It is to test yourself on it, find the twenty or thirty facts that will not stick, and work on those.
Almost every wrong answer in these three tests is a real fact from somewhere else in the chapter, put next to the right one deliberately. The pairs worth separating before you sit the test:
The official handbook is the third edition, published in 2013, and the test is set from it. Events since then are not on the syllabus, however important they have been — which is unusual and worth knowing, because it means you are revising a fixed body of material with a known end date rather than keeping up with the news.
