Several groups of four run through this chapter, and each one is asked about from every direction — name the saint, name the date, name the country, name the emblem. Learning them as sets rather than as separate facts turns a dozen possible questions into one piece of knowledge:
And one fact worth knowing because it surprises people: the Union Flag has three crosses on it — St George, St Andrew and St Patrick — and none for Wales, which was already joined to England when the flag was designed.
5 November is Bonfire Night, for the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. 11 November is Remembrance Day, for those who died in wars, marked by wearing a poppy. Six days apart, both in November, and regularly answered with each other.
The Church of England is the established church in England and the monarch is its Supreme Governor. The Church of Scotland is Scotland's national church, Presbyterian and organised without bishops — a genuinely different institution rather than a regional branch. Wales and Northern Ireland have no established church.
Alongside that, the country has many faiths and a large number of people with no religion at all, and freedom of belief is one of the fundamental principles. The test expects you to know both halves: the historical establishment, and the present plurality.
