What this task type is, and why it matters more than it looksOn the TOEFL iBT® test, this task type accounts for 30 of the 50 reading items — more than the other two reading task types put together. It is reported under its own reading skill and aims at the CEFR range from B1 to C1 and above. It is machine scored, one point an item.What it measures is the ability to reconstruct text: knowing which word belongs in a gap, in which form, using word-order rules, vocabulary knowledge and an understanding of what the sentence is saying. In practice you are given a passage in which words are partly shown — some letters visible, the rest missing — and you complete them so the passage reads correctly. It tests three things at once: whether you know the word, whether you know its correct form in this grammatical slot, and whether you have understood the sentence well enough to know which word belongs there at all.How it is practiced here, and how that differsOn the real test you type the missing letters. A quiz cannot ask you to do that, so here each gap is presented with the visible letters shown and four candidate completions to choose between.Be clear about what that changes:

What is the same — the knowledge. Which word fits the meaning, which form fits the grammar, which collocation a proficient reader expects. The distractors are built to be the words a test taker actually reaches for: the right root in the wrong part of speech, the right part of speech with the wrong meaning, a near-homograph, a form that would need a different preposition.

What is different — recognition is easier than recall. Seeing the answer among four options is a lower bar than producing it from a stem of letters. Use these to find the gaps in your word knowledge, then cover the options and try to produce the word from the visible letters before you look.

Anyone telling you this task type can be reproduced exactly as multiple choice is selling you something. It cannot; it is still worth practicing, because the vocabulary and the morphology it tests are exactly what the section is built around.Where the marks goWord form rather than word choice. Most people can see that the gap needs something meaning "increase"; fewer reliably pick between increase, increased, increasing, increasingly and increment when the visible letters allow more than one.
