What these two tasks askOn the TOEFL iBT® test these are two items out of twelve, and the only two in the writing section judged against what you actually wrote rather than against a key. Both aim at the CEFR range from B1 to C2.

Write an Email. One item, in the register of getting things done inside an institution. You write a short multi-sentence message to a professor, an administrator, a department, a campus office. It is judged on whether it does its job. An email that is fluent and does not actually make its request, or that makes it in a register wrong for the person receiving it, has failed at the task rather than at the English.

Write for an Academic Discussion. One item, in academic register. You write a paragraph that takes a position and supports it, with varied grammar and vocabulary. You are given a discussion — typically a question and other people's contributions — and you add your own.

The whole writing section is 23 minutes for all twelve items, so these two tasks are done under real pressure with the ten sentence-construction items also to get through. Practicing them untimed and then discovering that on the day is the expensive route.How this is practiced hereEach material prints as a paper you answer by hand, photograph and upload. The check comes back task by task: what the task required, what your answer did and did not do — the request made or left implicit, the register held or dropped, the position stated or hedged away, the support offered or asserted, the range of structures actually used.You will not get a band from us, deliberately. The real thing is scored by ETS on the 1 to 6 scale introduced in January 2026, from a calibrated model against a large sample. A number invented here would look like that number and would not be it. What is useful, and what you get, is a named list of what the answer did not do.Writing by hand when the test is typed is a deliberate choice. The composition is the same, and longhand makes the length and the clock concrete in a way a keyboard hides. If you are close to your test date, do at least one of each timed, on the computer, as well.Where the marks goOn the email: register, and finishing the job.
