GCSE Biology: Cell Structure and Microscopy

Cell biology opens every GCSE Biology course because everything that follows — organisation, disease, inheritance — builds on what cells are and how we see them. This quiz covers the full opening topic as it is assessed at both Foundation and Higher tier.

The organelle questions test the working knowledge examiners expect: which structures are common to plant and animal cells (nucleus, mitochondria, cell membrane, ribosomes) and which are plant-only (chloroplasts, cell wall, permanent vacuole), what each organelle actually does — from ribosomes as the site of protein synthesis to the permanent vacuole maintaining turgor pressure — and the defining differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, including the size difference and the absence of a true nucleus in bacteria.
