GCSE Biology: Digestion and Enzymes

Enzymes are the first place GCSE Biology asks you to think mechanistically: not just what happens, but why rate changes with conditions and what "denatured" really means. This quiz covers enzymes through their most-examined context — the digestive system.

The enzyme questions build the model layer by layer: the lock-and-key analogy with the substrate as the key fitting the enzyme's active site, what happens at temperatures higher than the optimum (the active site changes shape — denaturation, not "the enzyme dies"), and the full list of factors affecting enzyme-controlled reactions: temperature, pH and substrate concentration. A deduction question closes the loop: an enzyme with an optimum pH of 2 must work in the stomach — the only strongly acidic compartment of the digestive tract.

The digestion questions map the three enzyme families onto their substrates and products: amylase breaking starch into sugars, protease breaking proteins into amino acids, lipase breaking lipids into fatty acids and glycerol — plus where proteases are produced (stomach, pancreas, small intestine) and where the products of fat digestion are absorbed. Organ-level questions cover the large intestine's water reabsorption role and the two reasons the stomach is acidic: killing pathogens and providing the working pH for its protease.
