GCSE Biology: Respiration and Metabolism

Respiration questions separate students who memorise an equation from those who understand energy transfer — and GCSE papers are written to find out which you are. This quiz covers aerobic and anaerobic respiration, the exercise response and metabolism.

The aerobic questions establish the core: respiration's purpose is releasing energy from glucose (not "making" energy — a distinction mark schemes police), the equation glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water, and the mitochondria as the site where most of the energy-releasing reactions happen. The anaerobic questions then set up the comparison the specification names explicitly: in muscles, glucose is only partially broken down to lactic acid, transferring much less energy per glucose molecule — the reason anaerobic respiration is described as less efficient — while in yeast, fermentation produces ethanol and carbon dioxide, with a dedicated question linking it to baking and brewing.

The exercise questions track the body's response: breathing rate, breath volume and heart rate all rise to supply muscles with more oxygenated blood. When demand still outstrips supply, lactic acid accumulates — and the quiz tests both the term for what follows (oxygen debt: the extra oxygen needed to react the lactic acid away) and the fate of the lactic acid itself, transported to the liver and converted back to glucose.

Metabolism closes the set, defined as the sum of all reactions in a cell or the body, with a discrimination question separating true metabolic reactions (glucose to glycogen, lipid synthesis) from physical processes like diffusion. Explanations consistently phrase energy transfer the way examiners require.
