GCSE Chemistry: Ionic, Covalent and Metallic Bonding

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding are the three ideas that explain why every substance behaves the way it does, and GCSE examiners test them both as definitions and as explanations of properties. This quiz does the same.

The formation questions establish the three mechanisms cleanly: electron transfer from metal to non-metal for ionic bonds, shared pairs for covalent bonds, and the lattice of positive ions in a sea of delocalised electrons for metals. Ion prediction gets a dedicated question — Group 2 forming 2+ and Group 7 forming 1− ions — plus a spot-the-element question identifying which element forms a 2− ion, testing the group-to-charge logic rather than memorised examples.
