The Industrial Revolution in Britain

The Industrial Revolution is one of those topics where students can name the inventions but struggle to explain the causation — why Britain rather than France or China, why textiles rather than some other trade, and why the factory replaced the cottage at the precise moment it did. This module is built around those connections rather than around a list of names and dates to be recited.

It opens with preconditions. The Agricultural Revolution, driven by enclosure and improved crop rotation, raised food output and released labour for urban work — a prerequisite rather than a side effect. Britain's coal reserves and the capital accumulated through global trade networks supplied the other two legs.

The mechanisation of textiles is then traced in sequence, because the sequence is the point: each invention created a bottleneck that the next one solved. Kay's flying shuttle, Hargreaves' spinning jenny, Arkwright's 1769 water frame — which required water power and therefore forced the shift to the factory system — and Crompton's mule. Alongside this, Henry Cort's 1784 puddling process for refining pig iron into wrought iron using coal, and James Watt's improvements to the steam engine, which made engines efficient enough to free factories from riverside locations.

Transport follows, with the Liverpool and Manchester Railway of 1830 as the first inter-city line to rely exclusively on steam. The module then turns to consequences, and does not soften them: overcrowding, poor sanitation and the spread of diseases such as cholera in rapidly growing cities; child labour and the early Factory Acts that regulated working hours and introduced inspection; the Luddites, who from around 1811 destroyed machinery that threatened their livelihoods; and Chartism, whose central demand was political — universal male suffrage — rather than economic. The economic outcome is summarised as a step change in productivity and the transition from cottage industry to factory production.
