AP Psychology — development and learning

Unit 3 of AP Psychology puts two large topics side by side — how people change across a lifespan, and how behaviour is acquired — and is worth between 15 and 25 per cent of the exam. This set takes ten of its ideas, one question each, and asks almost all of them through a described case, because naming a term and recognising it in the wild are different skills and only the second one is examined.

Three questions carry distinctions that decide marks. The operant one describes a car that chimes until the seatbelt is fastened, after which the driver starts fastening it earlier than before. A great many students call this punishment, because the chime is unpleasant — but the behaviour went UP, and a consequence that increases a behaviour is reinforcement whatever it feels like. The word negative marks removal, not unpleasantness. Ask whether the behaviour became more or less frequent before touching the sign, and this whole family of questions becomes mechanical.

The attachment question turns on the reunion rather than the separation: crying when a parent leaves classifies nothing, since a securely attached infant may or may not cry. What classifies is whether contact on return works — comfort sought, comfort effective, play resumed. And the developmental questions are deliberately written so that age will not answer them. A five-year-old says the tall glass holds more and gives his reason, the higher water line; it is the reasoning, attending to one dimension and ignoring the compensating one, that identifies the concept.

The last question is the one that unsettles the rest of the unit. A man eats an unfamiliar fish, is sick four hours later from a virus he already had, and decades on still cannot stand the smell — knowing perfectly well the fish was innocent. Ordinary conditioning wants repeated pairings and a gap of seconds. One trial across four hours, immune to correction by knowledge, says that organisms are prepared to learn some associations far more readily than others, which for a foraging animal is exactly the right design.

Every distractor is a specific error and each explanation names it: reading negative reinforcement as punishment, swapping the conditioned and unconditioned stimulus, confusing generalisation with discrimination, taking scaffolding for imitation.

Two limits. Every scenario here is invented and said so in the question, and where a real body of research established an effect — Ainsworth on attachment patterns, Bandura on learning from a model — it is named in the explanation for what it genuinely found rather than dressed up as a fresh anecdote. And this trains only the multiple-choice two-thirds of the exam; the free-response third asks for an article analysed and an argument built from evidence, which no bank of options can rehearse.

  • Recognise scaffolding by the pitch of the support and by its deliberate withdrawal
  • Classify an attachment pattern from reunion behaviour, not from the degree of distress at separation
  • Match a described life situation to the Erikson stage whose task it represents
  • Pick out the conditioned and unconditioned stimulus in an everyday case, and avoid reversing them
  • Explain why spontaneous recovery shows that extinction does not erase the original learning
  • Classify a consequence as reinforcement or punishment by asking first whether the behaviour increased
  • Predict response rate and resistance to extinction from whether a schedule is ratio or interval and fixed or variable
  • Recognise learning from a consequence experienced by someone else, and distinguish it from direct conditioning
  • Explain why conditioned taste aversion is evidence that some associations are biologically prepared

Built against the published structure of AP Psychology as it now stands: five units, each weighted between 15 and 25 per cent of the exam, with Unit 3 covering development and learning. The exam runs 2 hours 40 minutes in two sections: 75 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes for 67 per cent of the score, then two free-response questions in 1 hour 10 minutes for the remaining 33 per cent, an Article Analysis Question and an Evidence-Based Question. In an invented case, a five-year-old watches water poured from one of two identical short glasses into a tall narrow one. He agreed a moment earlier that the two short glasses held the same, but now says the tall glass holds more, and points at the higher water line as his reason. What does his answer show?

He has not yet acquired conservation

Conservation is the understanding that a quantity survives a change of appearance — pouring changes the shape of the water, not how much there is. His reason gives the mechanism away: he is judging by a single dimension, height, and taking no account of the narrower width that compensates for it. That is exactly the limitation conservation overcomes, and it typically resolves during the concrete operational years. Object permanence is a much earlier achievement, the understanding that a thing still exists once out of sight, and it is settled long before five — he can see the water throughout, so nothing has been hidden from him. Egocentrism is the difficulty of taking another person's point of view; his error concerns quantity, not perspective, and he would give the same wrong answer alone in a room. Formal operational reasoning is abstract and hypothetical thinking, which arrives years later and would in any case not produce this mistake. The general trap is answering from the child's AGE rather than from what he actually did — the behaviour described, not the number of birthdays, is what identifies the concept.
