Verbal reasoning is not a test of anything taught in school, which is exactly why it rewards preparation so heavily: the content is a set of about twenty recurring puzzle types, and a child who has met each type before answers in seconds while a child meeting it for the first time spends two minutes working out what is being asked. Synonyms and antonyms, odd one out, analogies, letter and number sequences, letter codes, words hidden across the join of two words, and short logic problems — those are most of it. Vocabulary breadth is the one part that cannot be shortcut, and it is what separates the top of the range. Practice here works through the types, with every puzzle written out in full and every explanation saying what the rule was, so that the next one of the same shape is faster.
