National 5 Mathematics is examined by two papers, one without a calculator and one with, and the split matters more than it looks. The non-calculator paper is where surds, indices, expanding and factorising, and fraction arithmetic have to be automatic, because there is nothing to fall back on. The calculator paper is where the longer problems live: trigonometry in a non-right-angled triangle, similar shapes, compound percentage change, standard deviation. Across both, marks are given for method as well as for the answer, which means a clearly set-out attempt that ends in the wrong number still scores — and an unexplained correct number sometimes does not.
