National 5 and Higher (Scotland)
Scotland's school qualifications, which are a separate system from GCSEs and A Levels rather than a variation on them.
A different ladder
Pupils in Scotland move up a sequence of levels rather than sitting one set of exams at sixteen and another at eighteen. National 5 is normally taken in S4, around the age of fifteen or sixteen. Higher follows in S5, and Advanced Higher in S6 for those who stay on. Each level sits on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework: National 5 at SCQF level 5, Higher at level 6, Advanced Higher at level 7.
The practical consequence is that the qualification that matters most for university is Higher, taken in S5 — a year earlier than the A Levels an English applicant would be offering. Scottish universities make offers on Highers, and many pupils apply with them before sitting Advanced Highers at all. That compresses the timetable in a way students moving between the two systems often do not expect.
How grading works
National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher are all graded A to D, with anything below D recorded as no award. The bands are broadly A from 70 per cent, B from 60, C from 50 and D from 40 — grade D was widened to cover 40 to 49 per cent, having previously started at 45. The exact mark needed is not fixed in advance: grade boundaries are set each year after the papers have been marked, so that a paper that turned out harder than intended does not cost that year's candidates a grade.
Many courses are assessed by one or more question papers plus a coursework component — an assignment, a portfolio, a performance or a practical, depending on the subject — and where there is coursework it usually counts for a substantial share of the total. Some courses have none: National 5 and Higher Mathematics are assessed by two question papers alone, while National 5 English adds a writing portfolio to its papers. It is done during the year rather than in the exam hall, which means a mark banked early is a mark that does not have to be won in May.
Who awards it
The qualifications are awarded by Qualifications Scotland, the body that took over the awarding functions of the Scottish Qualifications Authority. Course specifications, past papers and marking instructions are published by them and are their copyright; nothing in this track is reproduced from any of them. What is practised here is the course content itself, written fresh, for three courses: National 5 English, National 5 Mathematics and Higher Mathematics.
