A-Level Biology: Carbohydrates and Lipids

Biological molecules open every A-Level Biology course, and carbohydrates and lipids are where the discipline's core logic first appears: structure explains function, and small chemical differences have large biological consequences. This quiz tests that logic at full A-level depth.

The carbohydrate questions run from monomer to polymer: condensation and hydrolysis as the universal bond-making and bond-breaking pair, the monosaccharides (with a question that separates fructose and galactose from the disaccharides and polysaccharides masquerading alongside them), and the structural comparison the specification prizes — starch against glycogen, tested on branching and its consequence for the speed of glucose release, and cellulose, tested on why beta-glucose chains and hydrogen-bonded microfibrils make it a structural material rather than an energy store.

The biochemical tests get exam-realistic treatment: the Benedict's test question specifically addresses the non-reducing sugar procedure — acid hydrolysis and neutralisation before the second test — which is precisely the step students forget, and the emulsion test for lipids with its ethanol-then-water sequence.

The lipid questions cover triglyceride formation from glycerol and three fatty acids, the single/double bond distinction between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, and phospholipid behaviour in water — the amphipathic property that makes bilayers, and therefore membranes, possible.
