GCSE Geography: Volcanoes and Hazard Management

Volcanoes are the second pillar of the tectonic hazards unit, and exam questions about them reward one thing above all: linking cause to consequence. Why does one volcano ooze gentle lava flows for decades while another destroys everything within kilometres in minutes? This quiz is built around that link.

The opening questions contrast shield volcanoes — broad, gently sloping, built from runny low-viscosity basaltic lava — with steep-sided composite volcanoes like Mount Fuji or Mount St Helens, where high-silica, viscous magma traps gases until pressure releases explosively.
