GCSE Maths: Standard Form

Standard form is how GCSE Mathematics handles the very large and the very small: the distance from the Earth to the Sun, the diameter of a cell, a light-year in kilometres. This quiz takes you through the complete standard form skill set as it appears on both Foundation and Higher tier papers.

The opening questions establish the fundamentals — writing large and small numbers as A × 10ⁿ and recognising when a number is not in valid standard form because its coefficient falls outside the range 1 ≤ A < 10. From there the difficulty builds through the four operations: multiplying and dividing numbers in standard form by handling coefficients and indices separately, and the more subtle addition and subtraction questions, where the exponents must first be matched before the coefficients can be combined.

Real-world contexts run through the set, because that is exactly how exam papers frame these questions: astronomical distances, microscopic measurements, and multi-step calculations such as scaling a light-year by a number of years and renormalising the answer back into valid standard form — the step where a coefficient like 47.3 must become 4.73 with the exponent adjusted to match.
