GCSE Physics: Atomic Structure

Atomic structure is the GCSE Physics topic where a scientific model is not just learned but watched evolving — and exam questions reward students who can explain why the model changed, not just what it says now. This quiz covers both layers.

The structural questions secure the current picture: protons, neutrons and electrons with their relative masses and charges, reading the composition of an atom from its atomic number and mass number (11 and 23 giving 11 protons, 11 electrons, 12 neutrons), the definition of isotopes as same-proton different-neutron nuclei, and the striking scale fact that an atom's radius is tens of thousands of times larger than its nucleus — which is the geometric heart of why matter is mostly empty space.
