GCSE Physics: Energy Resources

Energy resources is the evaluative corner of GCSE Physics: fewer calculations, more judgement. Exam questions here ask you to classify, compare and weigh trade-offs between the ways we generate electricity, heat homes and power transport — and this quiz practises exactly that reasoning.

The classification layer comes first: which resources are renewable (replenished on a human timescale — wind, hydroelectricity, solar, tidal, geothermal, biomass) and which are not (coal, oil, gas, nuclear fuel). The quiz then probes the comparisons that carry the marks. Reliability: why geothermal provides steady baseload power independent of the weather, while solar is intermittent by nature and tidal is limited to specific coastal geography. Environmental impact: carbon dioxide from coal combustion as the driver of climate change, the absence of CO₂ emissions during nuclear generation set against its waste problem, and the flooding and community displacement caused by large hydroelectric dams.

Two questions push into the subtler territory the specification flags. The "carbon neutral" claim for biomass is examined through its actual reasoning — CO₂ absorbed during growth balancing CO₂ released in combustion — rather than as a slogan. And a sector question separates how the UK actually uses energy: transport still dominated by oil, home heating by natural gas, electricity generation by an evolving mix.

Every question is self-contained, and the explanations articulate the advantage-versus-disadvantage reasoning in the balanced form that six-mark evaluation questions reward. There are no formulae here at all — this topic is about argument quality, and the distractors are built from the one-sided or overstated claims that weak exam answers make.
