AP Psychology — cognition

Unit 2 of AP Psychology covers memory, thinking and testing, and is worth between 15 and 25 per cent of the exam. This set works through ten of its ideas, one question each, and almost all of them are asked through a described experiment rather than a definition — because the exam does that, and because the interesting part of this unit is usually what a result rules out.

Several questions are built so that the design itself does the teaching. The encoding question gives two groups the same forty words for the same length of time, one counting vowels and one judging whether each word fits a sentence, with neither group told a test was coming. Everything is held constant except what the task forced the participant to notice — and the group that had to consider meaning recalls far more, without ever intending to. The working-memory question gives a pattern rather than a fact: repeating a nonsense syllable wrecks digit recall, mentally rotating a shape barely touches it, and doing both is worse than either. That two tasks collide when they involve the same kind of material and not otherwise is the evidence for separate verbal and visual-spatial subsystems. The diving question is the same trick again: neither setting is better in itself, so the advantage belongs to the match between learning and recall, which is what the encoding specificity principle claims.

The interference question is included because the two terms are constantly swapped. A student learns French on Monday, Spanish on Tuesday, and is tested on the FRENCH — new material reaching backwards onto old is retroactive interference. The reliable method is to ask which list is being tested rather than which one is intruding.

Two items concern judgement rather than memory. Asked whether tornadoes or asthma kills more people each year, most say tornadoes, because tornadoes are reported and asthma deaths are not: availability substitutes ease of recall for frequency, and ease of recall tracks coverage. And a procedure described as having a ninety per cent survival rate is accepted far more often than the same procedure described as having a ten per cent mortality rate — identical information, opposite wording, different decision.

The last question is the one worth carrying furthest. A test can give almost exactly the same score a month apart, and agree with itself between its halves, and still predict nothing at all. That test is reliable and invalid, and the combination is common: a bathroom scale reading two kilograms over is perfectly consistent. The reverse — valid but unreliable — cannot happen, because a measure whose readings jump about is not tracking anything.

Nothing here reproduces any published test item, norm or diagnostic criterion, and every scenario is invented and said so in the question. Where a real study established an effect, it is named in the explanation for what it actually did.

Built against the published structure of AP Psychology as it now stands: five units, each weighted between 15 and 25 per cent of the exam, with Unit 2 covering cognition — memory, thinking, problem solving and testing. The exam runs 2 hours 40 minutes in two sections: 75 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes for 67 per cent of the score, then two free-response questions in 1 hour 10 minutes for the remaining 33 per cent, an Article Analysis Question and an Evidence-Based Question. Sample question

In an invented study, two groups see the same list of forty words for the same length of time. One group counts the vowels in each word; the other decides whether each word would fit sensibly into a given sentence. The design holds almost everything constant — same words, same exposure, no warning of a test for either group — so the only thing left to explain the gap is the KIND of thinking each task demanded. Counting vowels can be done without ever registering what a word means; judging whether it fits a sentence cannot. Processing for meaning connects an item to what is already known, and those connections are what a later attempt at recall has to travel along. That neither group expected a test is the detail that rules out deliberate memorising, and it is also what makes the result interesting: the advantage arrives without any intention to remember. Rehearsal is a real route into long-term memory but not the one operating here, since nobody was repeating anything. Difficulty on its own is not the explanation either — counting vowels in forty words is laborious and still produces poor recall, which is precisely the point.
