National 5 English is examined by two question papers and a portfolio of writing done during the year. The first paper is Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation: a passage of non-fiction and a set of questions that ask you to put a point in your own words, to explain why a word or an image works, to identify the writer's tone, and to link one paragraph to the next. The second is Critical Reading, covering a Scottish set text and a critical essay. The marks in the first paper go to a technique that can be learnt rather than to reading ability: quote the word, name what it is doing, and say what effect that has. Practice here concentrates on that technique and on the terminology it needs, since both are entirely learnable and both are where most of the lost marks are.
