National 5 English: Critical Reading of Prose and Drama
Every text in this practice is invented, which is deliberate: no question can be answered from having read a particular book, only from thinking about what a writer is doing and why. A nine-year-old narrator reports conversations he does not understand while the reader understands them perfectly — and naming that gap is the whole answer. A narrator insists he was never angry while every scene shows him shouting, and one of the wrong options is that the writer has made a mistake, which is exactly how the device looks to someone meeting it for the first time. A woman never finishes a sentence when her husband is in the room and speaks fluently to everyone else, and the play has told you about that marriage without a line of dialogue saying so. Two characters discuss the weather for a page while one waits to learn whether he still has a job, and the trivial subject is what makes the real one unbearable. The set also covers a town whose closed mine is the cause of the family's argument rather than the backdrop to it, a story told out of order, what separates theme from plot, stage directions that darken a room nobody mentions, and what a critical essay paragraph has to contain to earn anything.
