Coastal landscapes are the other half of the UK physical landscapes unit, and they carry their own process vocabulary that must not be muddled with rivers — a confusion this quiz is deliberately built to expose and fix.
The process questions start on land: mechanical weathering through freeze-thaw cycles that wedge rocks apart as water expands on freezing, chemical weathering, and the mass movement types — sliding, slumping and rockfall — that deliver cliff material to the sea. Marine processes follow with the precision mark schemes reward: hydraulic action and abrasion as erosion, attrition shaping the load, and the crucial distinction between erosion, transportation (longshore drift's zigzag of swash and backwash driven by waves approaching at an angle) and deposition. A wave question anchors it all: constructive waves with strong swash, low height and long wavelength build beaches; destructive waves strip them.
The landform questions then follow erosion and deposition to their conclusions. On discordant coastlines, alternating hard and soft rock bands create headlands and bays; on the headlands themselves, the cave–arch–stack–stump sequence plays out, while repeated undercutting at the cliff base drives cliff retreat and leaves wave-cut platforms. Depositional landforms complete the picture: beaches, spits extending across estuaries by longshore drift, bars, and sand dunes with their embryo-dune beginnings.
