GCSE Physics: Motion

Motion is the most graph-heavy topic in GCSE Physics, and the skill the exams actually test is translation: between words, numbers and the two canonical graphs. This quiz practises all three representations, with every graph described completely in words so the interpretation itself is what earns the marks.

The definitional questions separate the pairs students conflate: distance versus displacement — worked through a two-leg journey where 40 m north then 30 m east gives 70 m of distance but only 50 m of displacement — and speed versus velocity, distinguished by direction and by what each is the rate of change of. Typical everyday speeds (walking, running, cycling, sound) are tested as the specification requires.

The calculation questions cover the core kinematics with concrete values: average speed from distance and time with a minutes-to-seconds conversion, acceleration from a velocity change over time, final velocity of a runner accelerating from rest, and deceleration of a braking car. Consistent with the 2025–2027 equations sheet arrangement, the questions test selecting and applying the relationships, never reciting them.

The graph questions are the heart of the set. For distance-time graphs: a straight diagonal line as constant speed, a flat line as stationary, a curve as changing speed. For velocity-time graphs: the gradient as acceleration and the area under the line as distance travelled — combined in a single question where a line from the origin to (4 s, 12 m/s) yields both the acceleration of 3 m/s² and the 24 m covered. A final conceptual question tests that acceleration includes changing direction at constant speed, the subtlety that separates a grade 7 answer from a grade 5 one.
