GCSE Physics: The Particle Model

The particle model is GCSE Physics' bridge between the invisible and the measurable: arrangements of particles on one side, density, temperature and pressure on the other. This quiz spans that bridge in both directions.

The descriptive questions secure the model itself: how particle arrangement and motion differ between solids, liquids and gases, why liquids flow while keeping contact between particles, and why mass — and particle count — are conserved through any change of state. Internal energy is tested as the specification defines it: the total kinetic and potential energy of all the particles in a system, with the crucial corollary that during a change of state the temperature stays constant while energy goes into breaking bonds rather than speeding particles up.

The calculation questions apply three quantitative strands with every constant given in the question, matching the 2025–2027 equations sheet arrangement. The gas questions cover both classic behaviours: pressure rising with temperature at constant volume, explained through faster particles colliding harder and more often, and pressure doubling when volume halves at constant temperature. A final question asks which factors genuinely determine gas pressure — collision frequency, collision force and wall area — separating the mechanism from vague associations. Every explanation connects the macroscopic result back to particle behaviour, which is exactly the explanatory move that six-mark questions on this topic demand.
