SAT — central ideas and details

Information and Ideas is the largest content domain on the SAT's Reading and Writing section, and central ideas and details is the part of it that decides most marks. These ten questions each carry their own short passage — sixty to a hundred and ten words, quoted in full inside the question — so nothing here depends on a text printed elsewhere. Six ask what the writer's main point is; four ask what the writer says about one particular detail. The passages are spread the way the real section spreads them: quantum coherence in diamond and a migrating butterfly for science, an urban planting project and the rise of remote work for social science, a nineteenth-century library's steel frame behind its stone facade for the humanities, the Dutch Golden Age and the petitions of 1848 for history, and two passages written in the register of published fiction.

What makes this kind of question hard is never the passage; it is the wrong answers, and they are built here to be wrong in four distinct and nameable ways. One kind is true according to the writer but is a supporting detail offered in place of the main claim — the pottery question ends with exactly that trap, where "the clay was examined for its chemical composition" is a perfectly accurate statement of the method and no statement at all of the conclusion. A second kind overstates: a qualified claim made absolute, or a local finding made universal, as when a writer's "may outweigh" is returned as a claim that one of the two effects was negligible. A third reverses something, either the relationship the writer describes or who holds which view — the architecture question offers back, as though it were the writer's own position, precisely the interpretation the writer spends the passage correcting. The fourth uses the writer's own vocabulary to assert something the writer never says, which is the hardest to catch because the words all look familiar.

Every explanation names which of the four each wrong choice is, and describes the choice rather than pointing at its place in the list, so the reasoning still holds however the options happen to be ordered. Read them even after a correct answer: the skill being built is recognizing these four shapes quickly enough that they stop being tempting.

Every study, researcher and institution described in these passages is invented, and no invented finding is attributed to any real organization, journal or university. Nothing is reproduced from any College Board publication, released test, practice test, question bank or scoring guideline, and no copyrighted literary or journalistic text is quoted: all ten passages were written fresh for this exercise. The real section pairs some questions with graphs and tables, and there are none here — every passage is prose.

  • Separate a passage's central claim from the details that support it
  • Locate what a writer states about one specific detail without importing outside knowledge
  • Recognize an overstatement, where a qualified claim has been made absolute or a local one universal
  • Recognize a reversal, including a view attributed to the wrong party
  • Spot a choice built from the writer's own vocabulary that asserts something the writer never says
  • Notice when a true statement about method is being offered in place of a conclusion
  • Read a passage's opening sentence as the view being corrected rather than the view being argued
  • Track hedging words such as suggest, may and largely, and keep them in the answer chosen

Dr. Aris Thorne and his team at the Institute for Advanced Solid State Research demonstrated that by introducing specific nitrogen-vacancy centers, the decoherence rate is effectively suppressed. This discovery suggests that quantum computing architectures might not require the extreme cryogenic cooling systems that have long been considered a fundamental barrier to practical, large-scale implementation." Which choice best states the writer's main point?

The writer's point is the implication drawn in the final sentence: if coherence survives at room temperature, the cryogenic cooling long treated as an unavoidable barrier may not be needed after all. The choice calling cooling the most effective method reverses that, since the writer's whole argument is that it may be dispensable. The claim that diamond is the only suitable material turns a result about one material into an exclusive claim the writer never makes. And the choice naming nitrogen-vacancy centers as the cause of decoherence reverses the role the writer gives them, which is to suppress it.
