The Health and Science core is the part everyone takes before splitting towards nursing support, laboratory work, pharmacy or dental practice, and it is examined in writing. It covers the things that are the same wherever in the sector you end up: the law and the duty of care that govern working with people, safeguarding and how a concern is raised, infection prevention and control and the reasoning behind each precaution, health and safety, how records are kept and who may see them, consent and capacity, and the underpinning science — cells and tissues, the major body systems, and the chemistry and physics that clinical and laboratory work rest on. Practice here is scenario-based, because that is how the papers ask: a situation on a ward or in a lab, and a decision that follows from a principle rather than from a rule learnt by heart.
