This material covers the healthcare sector itself, the first area of the core knowledge in the T Level in Health. In the specification used for students starting from September 2026, it opens the paper on working in the health sector, one of the two written exams that, with an employer-set project, make up the core assessment. It gives you the map of the sector that later topics on safety, information, care and safeguarding build on.
You start with the origins of the NHS in 1948 and the main changes since, from the first charges in the 1950s to Integrated Care Systems under the Health and Care Act 2022. You then place services in primary, secondary and tertiary care, and compare how NHS trusts, foundation trusts, private providers and charities are funded. The regulators are set side by side: the Care Quality Commission, which inspects and rates services in England; the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Health and Care Professions Council and the General Pharmaceutical Council, which register individual professionals; and bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
The material also covers what stops people reaching care, with socioeconomic, psychological, physical, cultural and geographical barriers and ways of reducing each, and the external pressures on services, from a local epidemic to a pandemic. You look at technology in care, including the NHS App, virtual wards and assistive devices. On professional practice, you work with evidence-based practice and research methods, the reflective models of Gibbs, Driscoll and Kolb, multidisciplinary team working and the main leadership styles, and with career routes from support worker roles to registered professions.
Most quiz questions are short workplace scenarios in invented hospitals, practices and care homes that ask which tier, body, barrier, model or style applies. The flashcards hold the key terms. The written work has eight longer tasks, such as comparing the CQC with the NMC or applying Gibbs' cycle to a recording error, marked against key points. The exam is a conversation with an examiner who asks about one part of the sector at a time and gives brief feedback at the end.
The questions are original practice material and do not predict what a particular exam will ask.
Practice material written by Zestly, based on the core content of the Pearson T Level Technical Qualification in Health specification (Version 1.2, July 2026, for students starting from September 2026), content area 1 (The healthcare sector) and section 2.3 (regulatory bodies).
