T Level Health and Science: Infection Prevention and Control

Infection control is a subject where knowing the words is not the same as knowing which one applies. Three of the four options in the opening question name real links in the chain of infection, and a learner who half-remembers the chain can argue themselves into any of them — washing hands between tasks breaks the mode of transmission, because the hands were how the organism was going to travel, and it does nothing to the reservoir or the portal of entry. The same pattern runs through the set. Sterilisation and disinfection are used interchangeably in ordinary speech and are not interchangeable here: one removes everything including spores, the other reduces what is present to a level considered safe. Cleaning has to come before disinfection because organic matter physically shields organisms from the disinfectant, so skipping it does not merely reduce the effect, it defeats the process.
